Electrical Safety
Practices and protective measures used to prevent electrical hazards, equipment damage, and injury when working with electrical systems and network equipment.
Voltage
The electrical pressure that pushes current through a circuit
Amperes (Amps)
A measure of electrical current flow (how much electrical current is flowing).
Watts
A measurement of total electrical power consumption.
Volts x Amps = ?
Electrical Power
The rate at which electrical energy is used or produced in a circuit, measured in watts (W).
Capacitor
An electronic component that stores and releases electrical energy when needed.

Stored Charge
Electrical energy that has been accumulated and retained in a device, such as a capacitor, for later use.
CRT Monitor (Cathode Ray Tube Monitor)
A display device that uses electron beams and a phosphor-coated screen to create images.

Alternating Current (AC)
An electrical current that periodically changes direction as it flows through a circuit.
Direct Current (DC)
An electrical current that flows in only one direction through a circuit.
AC Power
Electrical power delivered by a current that periodically changes direction as it flows through a circuit. It is the type of electrical power supplied by wall outlets and electrical grids.
DC Power
Electrical power delivered by a current that flows in a single direction through a circuit.
Power Supply
A device that provides electrical power to computer or network equipment by converting incoming power into the form required by the device.
Electrical Circuit
A complete path that allows electricity to flow.
Power Consumption
The amount of electrical power used by a device or system during operation, typically measured in watts (W). It is essentially how much electricity a device uses.
Electron Flow
The movement of electrons through a conductor, which in turn, creates an electrical current.
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
A backup power device that provides temporary power to equipment during a power outage and helps protect against power disturbances.
Offline UPS
A UPS that normally supplies utility power directly to connected devices and switches to battery power only when a power outage or significant power problem occurs.
Line-Interactive UPS
A UPS that regulates voltage fluctuations without switching to battery power and uses its battery only during power outages or major power problems.
Online UPS
A UPS that continuously powers connected devices from its battery and inverter, providing uniterrupted power and protection from power disturbances.
Battery Backup
A stored source of electrical power that provides temporary power to equipment when the primary power source is unavailable. It is a battery that keeps equipment running during a power outage.
Power Protection
Measures and devices used to protect equipment from power-related problems such as outages, surges, brownouts, and voltage fluctuations.
Power Outage
A complete loss of electrical power to a device, building, or area.
System Uptime
The amount of time a system, device, or network has been operating continuously without interruption or rebooting.
Power Distribution Unit (PDU)
A device that distributes electrical power from a single power source to multiple pieces of equipment in a rack or data center.
Remote Power Management
The ability to monitor, control, and manage the power supplied to devices from a remote location.
Rack Power Distribution
The process of delivering and distributing electrical power to the equipment installed within a rack.
Electrical Pressure
A common way of describing voltage, which is the force that pushes electrical current through a circuit.
Electrical Current
The flow of electric charge through a conductor, such as a wire. It is electricity flowing through a circuit.
Power Regulation
The process of maintaining stable and consistent electrical power by correcting voltage fluctuations and other power irregularities.
Electrical Conductor
A material that allows electricity to flow easily through it.
Electrical Load
A device or component that consumes electrical power from a circuit, it is anything that uses electricity.
Backup Power
An alternative source of electrical power used when the primary power source becomes unavailable.
Power Infrastructure
The collection of systems and equipment that provide, distribute, protect, and manage electrical power for an organization or facility.
