Adult Skeletal System
The skeletal structure of an adult consisting of 206 bones.
Baby Skeletal System
The skeletal structure of a baby consisting of 272 to 300 bones.
Ligaments
Connective tissues that link bone to bone.
Tendon
Connective tissue that links bone to muscle.
Axial Skeleton
One of the two divisions of the skeleton containing the middle structures: the skull and spinal column.
Appendicular Skeleton
One of the two divisions of the skeleton containing the side structures: the limbs and girdles.
Bony Thorax
The part of the axial skeleton composed of the ribs and sternum.
Radius
A bone in the upper limb that connects to the thumb.
Hematopoiesis
The process of blood cell formation occurring within the bones.
Functions of Bones
Body support, protection of soft organs, movement via attached skeletal muscles, storage of minerals (Ca and P) and fats, and hematopoiesis.
Pectoral Girdle
A group of bones in the appendicular skeleton consisting of the clavicle and scapula.
Pelvic Girdle
The bones that support the lower limbs in the appendicular skeleton.
Phalanges
The bones that make up the fingers and toes.
Tarsals
The bones located in the ankle region of the foot.
Metacarpals
The bones of the hand located between the carpals and phalanges.
Humerus
The long bone of the upper arm.
Femur
The long bone of the upper leg or thigh.
Patella
The bone commonly known as the kneecap.
Tibia
The larger, medial bone of the lower leg.
Fibula
The thinner, lateral bone of the lower leg.
