The executive is the branch of government responsible for implementing law and running the country.

  • Ministers must explain and justify their actions to parliament

  • BUT weak in reality, can refuse to answer by claiming confidentiality

  • Avoid giving full details and rarely resign

  • Even when things go wrong they often stay in power

Legal accountability:

Courts can review executive and they can be taken to court if act unlawfully 

M v Home Office - home sec ignored a court order and tried to act anyway. Court said they are not allowed and ministers must obey the law. Executive is subject to the jurisdiction of the courts
