Emotions
consist of behavior and autonomic responses
Autonomic Responses
involuntary regulation (heart rate, bodily fluids, etc.)
sympathetic nervous system arousal (flight or flight)
2 Emotional Experiences:
James Lange Theory
Cannon Bard Theory
James Lange Theory
stimulus is: autonomic arousal and muscle tension cause emotions
perception of emotion leads to a label
Spinal cord injury = less emotion
Ex. I feel afraid because I tremble,
Cannon Bard Theory
Stimulus is: autonomic arousal, muscle tension, and emotional all at once
all factors cause effect of stimulus on the brain
Ex. the dog made me tremble and I feel afraid
Locked In Syndrome
damage to brainstem
no motor function
absence of:
body movement
emotionality
sensation
Hormone responses to stress (threat)
hypothalamus → anterior pituitary glad → adrenal cortex (IN THIS ORDER)
have to have one release before the other can
elevates blood sugar and metabolic rate,
prepares body to respond
Hypothalamus
located in forebrain
coordinates both the autonomic nervous system and the activity of the pituitary
controls body temperature, thirst, hunger, and other homeostatic systems, and involved in sleep and emotional activity.
releases corticotropin (CRF)
releasing factor
anterior pituitary gland
releases adrenocorticotropic hormones (ACTH)
