West Texas (Mountains and Basins)
A dry and hot region featuring deserts and mountains; it is the least populated region and includes El Paso.
North Texas (Great Plains)
A region known for canyons and plains, specifically Palo Duro Canyon; it has cold winters, warm summers, and few trees.
Northeast Texas (North Central Plains)
An area characterized by rolling hills, tornadoes, and a climate ideal for farming and ranching, including Fort Worth.
East Texas (Coastal Plains)
The most populated region featuring rivers, forests, and a slope down to the Gulf of Mexico; it includes Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin.
Adobe
The material used by West Texas Pueblos to build their settled homes near rivers.
Karankawa
A southern coast Native American group known for using canoes, practicing ceremonial cannibalism, and fishing.
Coahuiltecans
A southern coast Native American group that ate small reptiles and rotten wood due to few usable resources.

The final battle of the Texas Revolution occurring on April 21, 1836.

The belief or doctrine that the expansion of the US throughout the American continents was both justified and inevitable.
Jefferson Davis
The President of the Confederate States of America during the U.S. Civil War.
Battle of Palmito Ranch
The last battle of the Civil War, which was fought in Texas.
Juneteenth
June 19, 1865, the date when slaves were freed in Texas.
13th Amendment
A Reconstruction amendment that freed slaves.
14th Amendment
A Reconstruction amendment that gave citizenship.
15th Amendment
A Reconstruction amendment providing that freed males can vote.
Jim Crow Laws
Local and state statutes in some southern states that allowed for segregation and discrimination.
Quanah Parker
The individual recognized as the last great Comanche chief.
Buffalo Soldiers
An African American military unit who fought on the frontier during the Frontier Wars.
Texas Rangers
An elite Texas law enforcement agency originally established by S.F.A. (Stephen F. Austin).
James Hogg
The individual who established the Texas Railroad Commission to regulate railroads and protect farmers.
1900 Storm
A major hurricane in Galveston that led to the building of a seawall and the raising of the island.
1901 Spindletop
An oil boom that increased population, helped the economy, and led to urbanization and the Houston Ship Channel.

A 1920 amendment to the Constitution that granted women the right to vote.
