Assist Resident with use of Bedpan, measure and record urine output, and HANDWASHING

Tools needed for skill:

2 barriers (chuck or towel), toilet paper, hand sanitizer, 2 pairs of gloves, bedpan, graduated container

Bedpan/Urine Output – What is the FIRST step? (opening statement)

1. knock

Bedpan/Urine Output – After opening statement what do you do?

Put on gloves; prepare supplies

Bedpan/Urine Output – After putting on gloves, what is the next step?

Ask resident to lift their hips; place the barrier towel, then place bedpan correctly (wide part facing buttocks).

Bedpan/Urine Output – After positioning on bedpan, what is the next step?

Raise the head of the bed to a comfortable level (45 degree angle)

Bedpan/Urine Output – After raising the head of bed, what is the next step?

Leave toilet paper and hand sanitizer within reach of resident

Bedpan/Urine Output – After leaving tissue within reach, what is the next step?

place call light nearby (“call me once you’re done”)

Bedpan/Urine Output – After returning to the resident, what is the next step?

Put on gloves (again); Lower the head of the bed

Bedpan/Urine Output – After lowering the head of bed, what is the next step?

remove the bedpan.

Bedpan/Urine Output – After removing the bedpan, what is the next step?

Pour bedpan liquid into graduate on leveled surface (make sure bedpan is on barrier towel)

for state:

(Hold the bedpan for the RN Test Observer while an unknown quantity of liquid is poured into it.)

measure the output (With the graduate at EYE LEVEL)

Bedpan/Urine Output – After measuring output, what is the next step?

Clean bedpan; dump, rinse; dump; rinse; dry → place in designated area

Bedpan/Urine Output – After cleaning bedpan, what’s next?

Clean graduate; dump, rinse, dump, rinse, dry → place in designated area

Bedpan/Urine Output – After rinsing bedpan, what is the next step?

Return equipment to storage.

Ask resident if they need some hand sanitizer

Bedpan/Urine Output – After providing resident with hand sanitizer, what is the next step?

Remove barrier towel (chuck) and dispose

Bedpan/Urine Output – After removing soiled barrier blanket, what is the next step?

Remove gloves and dispose

Record urine output (in mL)

(Must be within 25ml's of RN Test Observer's reading.)
