Anatomy
The study of the structure and organization of the human body.
Physiology
The study of body function.
Homeostasis
The process by which the body maintains a relatively constant internal environment despite changes in the external environment.
Gross Anatomy
The study of body structures that can be seen with the naked eye.
Microscopic Anatomy
The study of structures that must be seen with a microscope, including cells (cytology) and tissues (histology).
Homeostatic Control Mechanism
A regulatory process involving variables, stimuli, sensors, control centers, and effectors to maintain homeostasis.
Negative Feedback Loop
A process that counteracts a change in a variable to return to a set point.
Positive Feedback Loop
A process that amplifies change in a variable, leading to an increased response, moving the body away from homeostasis.
Directional Terms
Terms that explain the position of one body structure in relation to another, such as superior, inferior, anterior, and posterior.
Body Cavities
The ventral and dorsal cavities in the body that contain and protect internal organs.
