Scientific Method
A systematic approach to asking questions and gaining knowledge through logical conclusions.
Observation
The first step in the scientific method, involving the gathering of information through the senses.
Hypothesis
An educated guess or proposed explanation based on observations.
Experimentation
The process of testing the hypothesis through controlled procedures.
Analysis of Data
The examination and interpretation of data collected during experimentation.
Drawing Conclusions
The final step in the scientific method where results are summarized and implications are discussed.
Independent Variable
The variable that is manipulated in an experiment, predetermined before the experiment begins.
Dependent Variable
The variable that is measured in an experiment to assess the effect of the independent variable.
Standardized Variable
Variables that are kept constant throughout the experiment to ensure a fair test.
Control Group
The group in an experiment that does not receive the treatment and is used for comparison.
Experimental Group
The group in an experiment that receives the treatment or manipulation of the independent variable.
Graphing
The method of visually representing data, with the independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent variable on the y-axis.
Theory
A well-substantiated explanation based on facts, laws, and confirmed hypotheses.
