Introductory Rites
The first main part of the Mass that gathers the faithful into one community and prepares them spiritually to listen to God's Word and celebrate the Eucharist.
Sign of the Cross
A key element that marks the beginning of the Mass and invokes the Holy Trinity.
Penitential Act
A moment during the Introductory Rites to acknowledge sins, which includes forms like "I confess to almighty God" and "Lord, have mercy".
Kyrie eleison
A Greek phrase used during the Penitential Act meaning "Lord, have mercy".
Gloria
A hymn of praise to God said or sung on Sundays (outside Advent and Lent) and solemnities.
Collect
The Opening Prayer where the priest gathers all individual prayers into one; the people respond with "Amen."
Liturgy of the Word
The second main part of the Mass where God speaks to His people through Scripture and the faithful respond in faith.
First Reading
A reading usually taken from the Old Testament that ends with "The Word of the Lord."
Second Reading
A reading from the New Testament used during Sundays and solemnities.
Gospel Reading
The high point of the Liturgy of the Word, proclaimed by a priest or deacon.
Homily
The part of the Mass featuring an explanation and application of the readings.
Creed
The profession of faith, which can be the Nicene or Apostles' Creed.
Prayer of the Faithful
Intercessions for the Church and the world where the response is "Lord, hear our prayer."
Liturgy of the Eucharist
Known as the heart of the Mass, this is where bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ.
Eucharistic Prayer
The central prayer of the Mass including the Preface dialogue, Holy, Holy, Holy (Sanctus), Consecration, and Memorial Acclamation.
Consecration
The specific moment in the Eucharistic Prayer where bread and wine become Christ's Body and Blood.
Doxology
The prayer concluding the Eucharistic Prayer with "Through him, and with him…" to which the people respond "Amen."
Communion Rite
The part of the Mass where the faithful prepare for and receive Holy Communion.
Agnus Dei
The prayer known as "Lamb of God" used during the Breaking of the Bread.
Concluding Rites
The final part of the Mass designed to send the faithful out to live what they have celebrated, consisting of a Blessing and Dismissal.
MUGC
An acronym standing for Ministry of Ushers, Greeters, and Collectors.
Ushers
Members responsible for assisting in seating parishioners, maintaining order and silence, and guiding movement during Communion.
Greeters
Members who welcome people at the entrance to create a friendly atmosphere and help newcomers feel comfortable.
Collectors
Members who handle the offertory collection respectfully and ensure the process is orderly, honest, and filled with integrity.
