What are properties in the context of substances?
Characteristics that describe a substance using our senses.
List the five senses used to describe physical properties.
Sight, Sound, Smell, Touch, Taste.
What are observed properties?
Qualitative properties that do not have a numerical value and use senses to describe a substance.
Provide examples of qualitative properties.
Colour, Odour, Texture.
What are measured properties?
Quantitative properties that have a numerical value and use numbers to record observations.
Provide examples of quantitative properties.
Temperature, Height, Mass, Volume.
What is a state in physical properties?
The form a substance takes; can be solid, liquid, or gas.
Define hardness in terms of physical properties.
The ability to be scratched by another substance; harder substances are more resistant to scratching.
Give an example of a hard substance.
Diamonds.
What does malleability refer to?
The ability of a substance to be hammered into a thinner sheet or molded into shape.
Provide an example of a malleable substance.
Copper.
Define brittleness in physical properties.
How breakable or flexible a substance is.
Give an example of a brittle substance.
Glass.
What does ductility refer to?
The ability of a substance to be pulled into wires.
Provide examples of ductile substances.
Aluminum and Copper.
Define melting point.
The temperature at which a substance changes from solid to liquid.
What is the melting point of water?
0ºC.
Define boiling point.
The temperature at which a substance changes from liquid to gas.
What is the boiling point of water?
100ºC.
What is viscosity?
The ability of a substance to resist flow; thicker liquids are more viscous.
Provide an example of a viscous substance.
Maple syrup.
Define solubility.
A substance is soluble if it dissolves in a liquid, usually water.
Provide an example of a solubility property.
Kool-aid crystals dissolving in water.
What does lustre refer to in physical properties?
How shiny or dull a substance is and how it reflects light.
Provide an example of a shiny and a dull substance.
Silver (shiny), Wood (dull).
What is clarity in terms of physical properties?
The ability to allow light through; can be clear, translucent, or opaque.
Provide examples of a transparent, translucent, and opaque substance.
Glass (transparent), Frosted glass (translucent), Concrete (opaque).
What are the characteristics of observations in the Inquiry Lab?
Based on the 5 senses, are factual, and use descriptive words without opinions.
