Eukaryotes
Organisms whose cells have a nucleus enclosed within membranes.
Symbiotic relationship
A mutually beneficial interaction between different species, in this context between fungi and plants.
Mycorrhizae
Symbiotic associations of plant roots and fungi that enhance nutrient absorption.
Chlorophyll
A green pigment found in plants that is crucial for photosynthesis.
Gametophyte
The multicellular haploid stage in the alternation of generations in plants that produces gametes.
Sporophyte
The multicellular diploid stage in the life cycle of plants that produces spores.
Cuticle
A protective, waxy covering on plant leaves to prevent water loss.
Lignin
A complex organic polymer in the cell walls of certain plants that provides rigidity and support.
Fungi
A kingdom of usually multicellular organisms that absorb nutrients through external digestion.
Photosynthesis
The process by which green plants use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water.
Angiosperms
Flowering plants that produce seeds enclosed within a fruit.
Gymnosperms
Seed-producing plants that have seeds unprotected by an ovary or fruit.
Pollination
The transfer of pollen from the male parts of a flower to the female parts.
Decomposers
Organisms like fungi that break down dead organic material and recycle nutrients.
Saprobes
Organisms that obtain nutrients from dead or decaying organic matter.
Nutrient absorption
The process of taking up nutrients from the environment, commonly by fungi.
Lichens
A symbiotic association between a fungus and a photosynthetic microorganism that can colonize harsh environments.
Alternation of generations
The life cycle of plants characterized by the occurrence of both haploid and diploid multicellular stages.
Fungal hyphae
Thread-like structures that make up the vegetative part of fungi.
Basidiomycota
A division of fungi that includes mushrooms and shelf fungi, characterized by spore production in basidia.
Ascomycota
A group of fungi known as sac fungi that produce sexual spores in sac-like asci.
Glomeromycota
A group of fungi that form symbiotic relationships with plant roots, important for nutrient exchange.
Zygomycota
A group of terrestrial fungi characterized by a unique reproductive structure called zygosporangium.
Sporangium
A structure in fungi and plants where spores are produced.
