What is intermediate technology?
Sustainable technology appropriate to the needs, knowledge and wealth of the local population
How does intermediate technology help to reduce the development gap?
Can support local development projects, aimed at things like supporting agriculture and access to clean water
Example of intermediate tech? What benefits were there?
Adis Nifas, Ethiopia: A small dam was built, creating a reservoir close to fields for irrigation
Provided employment
Used only local tools and knowledge
Irrigated land helps to provide food for villagers
What is aid?
Donated resources or money to help a country develop - does not have to be paid back
What is voluntary aid?
Money donated by NGOs and by the general public
What is tied aid?
Aid given with certain conditions (ex. the recipient country must by the products of the donor country)
What is bilateral aid?
Aid that goes from one country to another (between 2)
What is multilateral aid?
Richer countries give one international organisation money, which is then redistributed as aid to the countries that need it
How does aid help to close the development gap?
Provides countries with the resources needed to develop things like education, industry and infrastructure for the public like sewage systems, roads and electricity
However, it is only long-term and freely given aid that helps countries to develop
What is Goat Aid Oxfam? How does it help?
Set up in countries like Malawi to donate money to families to buy a goat.
Goats help in a variety of ways
Good food source (And can be sold to others for profit)
Manure can be used as crop fertiliser
Goats are easily bred - they can be sold, or kept for families benefit
Downfalls of aid?
Donors can place conditions on the use of aid
Sometimes aid given is unsuitable
Some ‘aid’ is given as loans
Aid doesn’t always go to the poor
Aid can treat the consequences but not the underlying causes of uneven development
Can undermine local workers
