The term Church has three inseparable means: (1) the entire People of God throughout the world; (2) the diocese, which is also known as the local Church; and (3) the assembly of believers gathered for the celebration of the Liturgy, especially the Eucharist.
Church
The work of Salvation accomplished by Jesus Christ mainly through his Passion, death, ressurection, and Ascension
Paschal Mystery
The pattern of specific events in human history in which God clearly reveals his presence and saving actions. Salvation was accomplished once and for all through Jesus Christ, a truth foreshadowed and revealed throughout the Old Testament.
Salvation History
A solemn agreement between human beings or between God and a human being in which natural commitments are made
Covenant
The reign or rule of God over the hearts of people, and as a consequence of that, the development of a new social order based on unconditional love. The fullness of God's reign will not be realized until the end of time. Also called Kingdom of God
Reign of God
Generally a short story that uses everyday images to communicate religious message. Jesus used parables frequently in his teachings as a way of presenting the Good news of Salvation
Parable
The First of the Seven Sacraments and one of the three sacraments of Christian insitution (the other being Confirmation and Eucharist; by which one becomes a member of the church and a new creature in Christ
Baptism
The celebration of the entire Mass. The term can also be refered specifically to the concencrated bread and wine that have become Body and Blood of Christ
Eucharist
The fiftieth day following Easter, which commemorates the descents of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and disciples
Pentacost
A non Jewish person. In Sacred Scriptures, the Gentiles were the uncircumcised, those who did not honor the God of the Torah. St. Paul and other evangelist reached out to the Gentiles, baptizing them into the family of God.
Gentile
A person who voluntarily suffer death because of his or he belief. The Church has canonized many Martyrs as Saints.
Martyr
The act, required by Jewish Law, of removing the foreskin of the penis. Since the time of Abraham, it has been a sign of God’s covenant relationship with the Jewish People
Circumcision
The worship of being, creatures, or material goods in a way that is fitting for God alone
Idolatry

Sanctify
A special grace of the Holy Spirit given to an individual Christian or community. For the benefit and building up of the entire Church

A group of men or women religiously who are joined by common charism

A tittle used by the Bishop of Rome, who is the successor of St. Peter and shepard of Universal Church
Pope
One who has recieved the fullness of the Sacrament of Holy Order and is a sucessor to the Apostles
Bishiop
Also known as “Particular” or “local” Church, the regional community of believers, who commonly gather in Parishes, under the leadership of a bishop. At times a diocese us determined not on the basis of geography but on the basis of language or rite.
Diocese
One of the several type of documents that are written by the Pope. Its purpose is not to define doctrine, but encourage people in some aspects of living the faith
Apostolic Exhortation
A group of bishops from around the world who, at the Pope’s invitation, gather in Rome to discuss with him matters of concern to the Universal Church

The four essential features or characteristics of church: One; Holy, Catholic (universal), and Apostolic
Marks of the Church:
Often referred to as the Blessed Trinity, the central Christian mystery and dogma that there is one God in three Persons: Father, son and Holy Spirit
Trinity (Blessed Trinity)
A profession of faith or statement of Christian belief; the Apostles’ creed developed from the baptismal creed of the ancient church of Rome and is considered to be faithful summary of faith of the Apostles
Apostles’ Creed
An official profession of faith, usually prepared and presented by a council of the Church and used in the Church’s liturgy. Based on the Latin credo, meaning “I believe.”
Creed
A gathering of the Church’s bishops from around the world convened by the Pope or approved by him to address pressing issues in the Church and in the world.
Ecumenical Council
The formal statement or profession of faith commonly recited during the Eucharist.
Nicene Creed
From a Greek word meaning “likeness,” a sacred image of Christ, Mary, or the saints, especially in the artwork of the Eastern Churches.
Icon
A screen or partition with doors and tiers of icons that separates the bema, the raised part of the church with the altar, from the nave, the main part of the church, in Eastern Churches.
iconostasis
The sacrament by which baptized men are ordained for permanent ministry in the Church as bishops, priests, or deacons.
Sacrament of Holy Orders
The uninterrupted passing on of apostolic preaching and authority from the Apostles directly to all bishops. It is accomplished through the laying on of hands when a bishop is ordained in the Sacrament of Holy Orders as instituted by Christ. The office of a bishop is permanent, because at ordination a bishop is marked with an indelible, sacred character.
Apostolic Succession
The assembly of bishops, headed by the Pope, that holds the teaching authority and responsibility in the Church.
College of Bishops
This term (an adjective form of Peter) refers to the ministry of the Pope as the successor of Saint Peter and the symbol of the unity and faith of all Christians.
Petrine ministry
The conscious and deliberate rejection by a baptized person of a truth of faith that must be believed.
Heresy
Teachings recognized as central to Church teaching, defined by the Magisterium and considered definitive and authoritative.
Dogma
An official, authoritative teaching of the Church based on the Revelation of God.
Doctrine
The act of renouncing one’s faith.
Apostasy
A major break that causes division. A schism in the Church is caused by the refusal to submit to the Pope or to be in communion with the Church’s members.

One who engages in the academic discipline of theology, or “the study of God.” A theologian engages in the pursuit of faith seeking understanding.
Theologian
The state of being holy. This means to be set apart for God’s service, to live a morally good life, to be a person of prayer, and to reveal God’s love to the world through acts of loving service.
holiness
A profound change of heart, turning away from sin and toward God.
conversion
One of the Seven Sacraments of the Church, the liturgical celebration of God’s forgiveness of sin, through which the sinner is reconciled with both God and the Church
Sacrament of Penance and Reconcilation
The free and undeserved gift that God gives us to empower us to respond to his call and to live as his adopted sons and daughters. Grace restores our loving communion with the Holy Trinity, lost through sin.
Grace
Someone who has been transformed by the grace of Christ and who resides in full union with God in Heaven.
Saint
The act by which the Church officially recognizes a deceased Catholic as a saint.
Canonize
An important holy day in the Catholic liturgical calendar, such as Christmas, Easter, Pentecost, and All Saints’ Day
Solemnity
The sin by which the first humans disobeyed God and thereby lost their original holiness and became subject to death. Original Sin is transmitted to every person born into the world, except Jesus and Mary
Original Sin
The Catholic dogma that the Blessed Virgin Mary was free from sin from the first moment of her conception.
Immaculate Conception
The biblical event that includes the angel Gabriel’s visit to the Virgin Mary to announce that she is to be the Mother of the Savior.
Annunciation
The dogma that recognizes that the body of the Blessed Virgin Mary was taken directly to Heaven after her life on Earth had ended.

Along with One, Holy, and Apostolic, Catholic is one of the four Marks of the Church. Catholic means “universal.” The Church is Catholic in two senses. She is Catholic because Christ is present in her and has given her the fullness of the means of salvation and also because she reaches throughout the world to all people

Sacred Scripture
Tradition comes from the Latin tradere, meaning “to hand on.” Sacred Tradition refers to the living process of passing on the Gospel message and the Gospel handed on. It began with the oral communication of the Gospel by the Apostles, was written down in Sacred Scripture, and is interpreted by the Magisterium under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Both Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture have their common source in the revelation of Jesus Christ and must be equally honored

The Christian person’s activity that fulfills the apostolic nature of the whole Church when he or she works to extend the Kingdom of Christ to the entire world. If your school shares the wisdom of its founder, its namesake, or the charism of the religious order that founded it, it is important to learn about this person or order and his or her charism, be-cause as a graduate you will likely want to incorporate this charism into your own apostolate.

A call from God to all members of the Church to embrace a life of holiness. Specifically, it refers to a call to live the holy life as an ordained minister, as a vowed religious (sister or brother), or in a Christian marriage. Single life that involves a personal consecra-tion or commitment to a permanent, celibate gift of self to God and one’s neighbor is also a vocational state.
