Xian Mao (Curculiginis Rhizoma)
A Hot and Toxic herb that vigorously warms Ming Men Fire and Kidney Yang; known as the herbal "shock paddles" for stubborn Yang Xu.
Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex)
Eucommia Bark which tonifies Liver and Kidneys, strengthens sinews and bones, and quiets the Fetus; often salt-fried to increase potency.
Gou Ji (Cibotii Rhizoma)
Name translates to "dog's spine"; it tonifies Liver and Kidneys and expels Wind-Damp-Cold, especially for stiffness in the lower back and spine.
Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix)
Japanese Teasel Root used to "reconnect what is broken," tonifying Kidneys and Liver while promoting the movement of Blood and calming the fetus.
Gu Sui Bu (Drynariae Rhizoma)
The "mender of shattered bones" used for sprains, fractures, loose teeth, and topical treatment for alopecia (hair loss).
Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen)
Chinese Dodder Seed that warms Primal Yang and nourishes Yin without being cloying; benefits Spleen-Kidney related diarrhea and vision.
Sha Yuan Zi (Astragali Complanati Semen)
Nourishes Liver and Kidney to secure essence and brighten eyes; characterized as well-tolerated by elderly patients with sensitive digestion.
Zi He Che (Hominis Placenta)
Human Placenta, or "purple river vehicle," which augments Essence and Blood for exhaustion, infertility, and postpartum recovery.
Hai Shen (Stichopus)
Sea Cucumber/Sea Slug used to tonify Kidney Yang and nourish Blood; moistening enough to be used for patients with concurrent Yin Xu.
Hai Ma / Hai Long (Hippocampus)
Sea Horse or Pipe-fish used for male impotence, invigorating blood, and easing child birth after the water breaks.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix)
The premier Qi deficiency herb used for minute/weak pulse, prolapse, and generating fluids.
Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix)
Known as "poor man's ginseng"; it is safe for long-term use but does not generate fluids like Ren Shen.
Huang Qi (Astragali Radix)
Uplifts Clear Yang, promotes healing of flesh (pus), and addresses wasting and thirsting or prolapse.
Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata)
A cloying, warm tonic for Kidney, Liver, and Heart Blood/Yin; used for premature aging and wasting and thirsting.
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix)
The primary blood-moving herb within the Tonify Blood category, widely used for gynecological issues and constipation.
Xi Yang Shen (Panacis Quinquefolii Radix)
Cooling tonic that tonifies Qi and cools fire, specifically for Lung, Heart, and Kidney Yin deficiency.
Lu Rong (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum)
A very strong Yang tonic that enters the Chong, Ren, Dai, and Du vessels; used for severe Kidney Yang deficiency.
Ba Ji Tian (Morindae Officinalis Radix)
A Yang tonic for tight, sore low back and legs that is not too drying, described as almost a Yin tonic within its category.
Bu Gu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus)
Tonic used for bedwetting, wheezing, and Spleen/Kidney Yang Xu diarrhea; also used topically for vitiligo.
Yi Zhi Ren (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus)
Similar to Bu Gu Zhi but more astringing; used to stop salivation and leakage.
