Additive system RGB
A color model used in light-based media to increase energy.
Subtractive CMYK
A color model where colors are created by decreasing light; used in inks and dyes.
Integrative color model
Combines additive and subtractive systems to produce a wider range of colors.
Shade
A color made darker by adding black.
Tint
A color made lighter by adding white.
Tone
A color modified by adding gray or both black and white.
Masstone
The pure color as it comes out of the tube.
Undertone
The true color that lies beneath the surface.
Chromatic shadow
Shadow of a color opposite to the light source.
Contrasting colors
Colors that are far apart on the color wheel create strong visual contrast.
Contrast of value
The contrast between light and dark colors.
Monochromatic
A color scheme that uses variations in lightness and saturation of a single color.

The phenomenon where the appearance of a color changes based on the colors around it.
Successive color contrast
The effect of staring at a color, then seeing its complement when looking away.
