Setting

Where and when a story takes place

Point of View

The perspective or vantage point from which a story is told

Protagonist

The main character in a story

Plot

The events that happen in a story

Exposition

An introduction to the plot that introduces the characters, setting, and basic situation

Narrator

A speaker or character who tells the story

Omniscient third person point of view

The narrator knows and tells about what each character feels and thinks. Uses pronouns such as he, she, him, her and they.

Third person point of view

The narrator uses pronouns such as he, she, him, her, they, and them. There is no "I" telling the story.

First person point of view

A character tells the story using the pronoun "I."

Limited third person point of view

The narrator relates the inner thoughts and feelings of only one character, and everything is viewed from this character's perspective. Used the pronouns he, she, him, her or they.

Objective third person point of view

The narrator only shares what characters say and do. The narrator does not share what the characters think. Uses pronouns him, her, she, they, or them.

Conflict

A struggle between opposing forces.

Antagonist

A character or a force in conflict with the main character, or protagonist.

External Conflict

Man versus Man

Man versus Nature

Man versus Society

Character struggles against an outside force.

Internal Conflict

Takes place in the mind of the character.
