Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
A progressive disorder where the kidneys are damaged and unable to function properly.
End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
The stage of kidney disease where kidneys can no longer function, requiring dialysis.
Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR)
A laboratory finding that measures how much blood is filtered by the glomeruli in the kidneys.
Hypertension
High blood pressure that can damage blood vessels, particularly around the kidneys.
Stages of CKD
CKD is classified into five stages: CKD 1, CKD 2, CKD 3 (subdivided into CKD IIIA and CKD IIIB), CKD 4, and CKD 5.
Nephrons
The functional units of the kidney that filter blood.
Dialysis
A treatment required at ESRD that removes waste, toxins, and excess fluid from the blood.
Hemodialysis
A type of dialysis that uses an external machine to filter the blood.
Peritoneal Dialysis
A type of dialysis that involves filling the abdomen with a fluid (dialysate) to remove wastes from the blood.
Irreversible
A condition that cannot be cured or improved, as is the case with CKD.
Osmosis
The process by which fluids move to balance concentrations of solutes, used in peritoneal dialysis.
CKD IIIA
A substage of CKD stage 3 with a higher GFR than CKD IIIB.
CKD IIIB
A substage of CKD stage 3 with a lower GFR than CKD IIIA.
Control of disease processes
Management of underlying conditions like diabetes and hypertension to slow CKD progression.
Urine production
The process by which kidneys excrete waste, decreased when kidneys are damaged.
