Yeasts (informal)
unicellular fungi
Molds (informal)
fungi that grow like a fuzz (produce a fuzzy-looking mycelium)
Lichens (informal)
fungi that grow as the product of a symbiotic partnership with a unicellular alga or cyanobacterium
Mycorrhizal fungi or mycorrhizae (informal)
fungi that grow symbiotically with the roots of plants; ecto/endo
Ectomycorrhizae (informal)
mycorrhizae that only interface with the outside of the plant’s roots
Endomycorrhizae (informal)
mycorrhizae that penetrate into the plant's roots to integrate directly with the its vascular system
Mushrooms (informal)
large above-ground fruiting bodies (reproductive dispersal structures) of fungi with external spores
Truffles (informal)
large, below-ground fruiting bodies with internal spores (always around trees)
Deuteromycetes (informal)
the “imperfect fungi,” so named because we were unable to identify sexual reproduction in them when we relied heavily on the reproductive features of fungi in order to formally classify them
Phylum Chytridiomycota (the chytridiomycetes, or chytrids)
live in aquatic or very moist environments; mostly unicellular with a few barely more than unicellular
Phylum Zygomycota (the zygomycetes)
the microscopic pin, sugar, and bread molds, and some ectomycorrhizal fungi
Phylum Glomeromycota (the glomeromycetes)
the endomycorrhizal fungi
Phylum Ascomycota (the ascomycetes)
the sac fungi (baker’s yeast, morels, truffles, cup fungi, powdery mildews, black molds, and some of the lichens and ectomycorrhizae)
Phylum Basidiomycota (the basidiomycetes)
the club fungi [including the true (umbrella style) mushrooms, puffballs, chantarelles, smuts, rusts, and some of the lichens and ectomycorrhizae]
Phylum Chytridiomycota
(Chytridio-) "little pot" + (-mycota) "fungi"
Phylum Zygomycota
(Zygo-) "yoke" + (-mycota) "fungi"
Phylum Glomeromycota
(Glomero-) "ball" + (-mycota) "fungi"
Phylum Ascomycota
(Asco-) "sac" + (-mycota) "fungi"
Phylum Basidiomycota
(Basidio-) "little pedestal" + (-mycota) "fungi"
