How did Eisenhower deal with Korea?

In 1953 he signed an armistice that divided the nation along the 38th parallel. Dulles utilised Brinksmanship to get this treaty through and this is still in place today. Therefore the war has technically never ended.

In 1954/5 China attempted to overtake Quemoy and Matsu and threatened nuclear retaliation. Therefore, a defence treaty for Taiwan from the US was signed in 1955 to contain Maoist influence.

What was SEATO and what happened to it?

Founded by Dulles in 1954, it was meant to be the NATO of Asia. It was dissolved after devietnamisation was complete in 1977 given that the Vietnam war was essentially its only purpose.

Ngo Dinh Diem is installed as the south’s corrupt pro-US and anti-Buddhist leader who got into hot water in 1956 after refusing to conduct a proper election- the first of his many controversies.
