Paralysis

What is the temperature coffee and tea is served at?
160° to 180°
Choking
An obstructed airway - If the blockage isn’t removed; death
Mild Choking- Partially blocked (coughing/wheezing/talking)
Sever Chocking- Completely obstructed (no air moving at all)
Causes of Choking-
Pain when chewing
Weakened swallowing muscles
Not chewing enough
Talking/social (Down the wrong tube)
Prevention-
Proper positioning (90°, 90°, 90°)
Correct diet
Proper resident Identification
Begin meal time w/ a drink & Offer fluids
Don’t rush & Slow them down
Watch them eat
*Brain damage can occur within 4-6 mins
If a person is … then NO abdominal / chest thrusts
Coughing
Breathing
Talking
Cyanotic
Discoloration (blueish/gray)
Emergency
Any event that requires help immediately
*In an emergency it is important to provide privacy and dignity for the resident
Procedure:
Stay calm
Don’t move the resident until instruction from RN supervisor
Call 911 and be prepared to provide answers / care
Document everything that occurs
Seizure
Involuntary contraction of the body muscles
Brain abnormality
*Remember the time for ems
→ A seizure doesn’t mean a hospitalization
Loss of Consciousness
Not responsive to stimuli
Brief LOC- Fainting (syncope)
→ Can happen during a BM
Sustained LOC- Coma
Causes-
Fear
Hunger

Poor ventilation
Fatigue
Life threatening conditions (diabetes, choking, heart attack…)
Shock
Organs aren’t receiving adequate blood supply
Symptoms-
Increased Pulse
Decreased B/P
Increased Temp
*TRIO- 100/100/100
→ HR above 100, Temperature above 100, Cyanotic B/P below 100
Hemorage
Severe bleeding
*Head lacerations bleed a lot
Procedure-
Call for help
Apply pressure for epidermis exit
Provide care for oraphase exit
Hip Fracture
Requires a long rehab & Residents don’t tend to bounce back (start of the end)

Cerebral Vascular Accident - Stroke
F- Face (drooping / paralysis)
A- Arm (Drifting / Can’t squeeze / loss of strength)
S- Speech (Slurring / Garbled)
