ASSIST A DEPENDENT RESIDENT WITH A MEAL IN BED (2)

What's the first thing you do for any skill?

Knock Knock Hi my name is ___ and I’ll be your CNA for today.

step 1

Perform hand hygiene.

(I'm going to perform hand hygiene. Cover all surfaces of my hands with hand sanitizer and rub them together until they are completely dry.)

Explain the procedure to the resident.

(Next I’m going to explain the procedure. Today I’ll be assisting a dependent resident with a meal in bed.)

Provide resident privacy.

(I’m now going to provide privacy.)

“I’m going to gather all my materials (meal, utensils, clothing protector, wipes, hamper, trash)”

Ask the resident to state their name and verify that their name 

matches the name on the diet card.

(Now I’m going to ask the resident their name, and verify that their name matches the name on the diet card.)

Position the resident in an upright, sitting position BEFORE feeding. At least 75-90 degrees.

(Before I start feeding, I’m going to position my resident in an upright sitting position. At least 75 to 90 degrees.)

Protect clothing from soiling using a napkin, a clothing protector, or a towel.

“I’m going to use a (napkin, clothing protector, or towel) to protect the clothing from soiling.”

Provide hand hygiene for the resident BEFORE feeding.

“I’m now going to provide hand hygiene for my resident before feeding.” (can be done same way we do for ourselves)

Ensure the resident's hands are dry BEFORE feeding.

(And make sure that their hands are dry.)

Place soiled linen in a designated laundry hamper, or dispose of it in an appropriate container.

(I’m now going to place soiled linen in a designated laundry hamper.)

Sit in a chair, facing the resident, while feeding the resident.

(I’m now going to begin feeding, making sure that I’m facing my resident while feeding them.)

Describe the food and fluid being offered to the resident. 

“Today you’ll be having (say whatever or whatever is on the plate). Which would you like first?” (Then begin feeding)

Offer each fluid frequently.

(I’m going to frequently offer fluid.)

Offer small amounts of food at a reasonable rate.

(Make sure that I’m providing small amounts of the food at a good pace.)

Allow resident time to chew and swallow.

(And allow time for chewing and swallowing.)

Wipe the resident's hands and mouth AFTER the feeding 

demonstration.

(I’m going to wipe the hands and mouth once feeding is done.)

Remove the clothing protector and place it in a designated laundry hamper. If a napkin, dispose of it in the trash container.

Leave the resident sitting upright in bed with the head of the bed set up to at least 75-90 degrees.

Place the call light or signal calling device within easy reach of the resident.
