John Proctor - Act 2 - Revenge and persecution. Personal grudges fuel the witch trials.
"We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling the keys of the kingdom."
John Proctor - Act 3 - Hysteria and abuse of power. Irrational accusations give children authority over adults.
"A person is either with this court or he must be counted against it."
Deputy Governor Danforth - Act 3 - Abuse of power. Danforth refuses criticism and sees disagreement as opposition.
"We burn a hot fire here; it melts down all concealment."
Deputy Governor Danforth - Act 3 - Authority and arrogance. Danforth believes the court cannot make mistakes.
"There is a prodigious fear of this court in the country."
Deputy Governor Danforth - Act 3 - Fear and authority. The court controls people through intimidation.
"I cannot pardon these when twelve are already hanged for the same crime."
Deputy Governor Danforth - Act 4 - Pride and abuse of power. Danforth protects the court's reputation rather than seeking justice.
"I denounce these proceedings."
Reverend Hale - Act 3 - Courage and justice. Hale rejects the corrupt trials.
"Life, woman, life is God's most precious gift."
Reverend Hale - Act 4 - Compassion and reason. Hale values life over rigid principles.
"Until an hour before the Devil fell, God thought him beautiful in Heaven."
Reverend Hale - Act 1 - Appearance versus reality. Good people can be capable of wrongdoing.

Abigail Williams - Act 1 - Blame and hysteria. Abigail shifts responsibility to save herself.

Giles Corey - Act 3 - Greed and corruption. Giles exposes how accusations are used for personal gain.

Giles Corey - Act 4 - Courage and resistance. Giles refuses to cooperate even under torture.
"I cannot mount the gibbet like a saint. It is a fraud."
John Proctor - Act 4 - Human weakness and honesty. Proctor recognises his flaws but still chooses integrity.
