Acids
Substances that can be corrosive, taste sour, usually react with metals, and have a pH less than 7.
Alkalis
Substances that have a soapy feel, taste bitter, are often used as cleaning products, and have a pH greater than 7.
Indicators
Substances that change colour to show if a substance is an acid or an alkali, such as Universal Indicator, red cabbage, litmus, or phenolphthalein.
pH scale
A scale from 1 to 14 used to measure the strength of an acid or alkali, where 7 is neutral.
Neutralisation
The reaction that occurs when an acid and an alkali react to produce salt and water.
Hydrogen gas test
A test where a lit splint is held to the gas; if hydrogen is present, it will make a 'squeaky pop' sound.
Metal + Oxygen reaction
An oxidation reaction that produces a metal oxide.
Metal + Acid reaction
A reaction that produces a salt and hydrogen gas.
Chloride
The type of salt formed from reactions involving hydrochloric acid (HCl).
Nitrate
The type of salt formed from reactions involving nitric acid (HNO3).
Sulfate
The type of salt formed from reactions involving sulfuric acid (H2SO4).
Displacement Reaction
A reaction where a more reactive metal takes the place of a less reactive metal in a compound.
Reactivity Series
A list of metals arranged by their reactivity, including Potassium (K), Magnesium (Mg), and Copper (Cu).
Ductile
A property of metals meaning they can be drawn out into thin wires.
Malleable
A property of metals meaning they can be hammered or shaped without breaking.
Sonorous
A property of metals meaning they produce a deep or ringing sound when struck.
Filtration
A method used to separate solid pieces from a liquid, such as separating cabbage pieces from cabbage-water.
Chromatography
A method used to find out if a liquid contains more than one coloured substance.
Corrosive
A property of acids meaning they can damage skin or eyes by burning or irritating them.
Ethanoic acid
A weak acid (CH3COOH) with a higher pH than hydrochloric acid, found in substances like vinegar.
Metal oxide + Acid reaction
A reaction that produces a salt and water.
Metal carbonate + Acid reaction
A reaction that produces a salt, water, and carbon dioxide.
