What are common causes of cushings syndrome?
tumours secreting too much CRH or ACTH
How does cortisol affect fuel homeostasis?
It increases gluconeogenesis in the liver as well as breakdown of protein in muscle and lipolysis in adipose
What is the function of the corpus luteum?
To secrete large quantities of oestradiol and progesterone and thus prepare the uterus for implantation of a fertilised egg
What would be the effect of inhibiting the active transport of Na+ out of the ascending loop of henle?
Failure of separation if water and salt reabsorption as the ascending loop is impermeable to water
How does thyroid hormone influence gene expression?
By binding to nuclear receptors that bind to the hormone response elements on the gene
What is the relation of tM (transfer maximum) and the concentration of plasma glucose?
tM is the maximum amount of plasma glucose that can be reabsorbed in the PCT
Where is CRH produced and what does it act on?
The hypothalamus sand the ACTH secreting cells of the AP
What is the main source of ATP during middle distance runnning?
Glycolysis supplemented by oxadative phosphorylation of aceryl-CoA from glycogen and fat
What is the main source of ATP in low intensity exercise for a long period of time?
Glycogen and stored fat for oxidative phosphorylation
What are the main sources of ATP for short duration high intensity exercise?
Stored ATP and phosphocreatine - depleted in 10 secs -
How is FER calculated?
FEV1/FVC
What are the symptoms on a spirometer of obstructive lung disease and restrictive lung disease?
Low FER categorised by a low FEV1 for OLD
High FER >70 categorised by low FEV but could not produce a confirmed diagnosis anyway as healthy FER is around 75%
How does deoxygenation of blood increase the rate at which CO2 is converted to bicarbonate?
Deoxygenation removes H+ in blood which in turn causes a rightward shift in the equilibrium favouring the production of H+ and bicarbonate
How is MAP calculated from diastolic and systolic BP?
MAP = DBP + (SBP-DBP)/3
How is the stroke work measured?
The pressure-volume loop
