Start the scene.
Do you think she'll dream again tonight?
Second Runaway: …As things stand it's safer that way.
Still and all: I wonder what she dreams of.
First Runaway: Her husband, Hero, that's clear enough cause she calls out his name.
But what of him? Must be horrible. The way she wakes up screaming. And running from the cabin. And Homer hurrying out behind her. And the way he has to hold her close. And cover up her mouth.
Second Runaway: …does dream and scream, we'll be too far gone to hear her.
We came here figuring Homer would run off with us right away but he said no. Why you think that is?
First Runaway: Because of his foot. He's lost his foot and his confidence.
It ain't that. It's Penny, she's rooted here. And Homer is rooted to her.
Second Runaway: Our luck's dried up then. It's hopeless.
Please. We got a little more than an hour before it's dark enough to jet. That's enough time to get Homer to change his mind.
Second Runaway: I ran from a place further south.
And I ran from a place further south than that.
Second Runaway: Still are.
Say you'll come with.
Homer: Things are different now. Changed.
You know how to read the land and sky. You can read the weather and the birds.
Second Runaway: We made them ourselves.
Some for you too.
Homer: I don't think so.
Now's your chance.
Homer: Such as?
Freedom.
First Runaway: Then stay.
And rot.
Homer: I can't leave Penny.
Because of love?
Homer: Wouldn't be fair to leave her here all alone with the Missus.
Hero might be coming home soon, the way she dreams of him, wouldn't you say? Or is that just the way I'm reading it?
Homer:…I'd be laughing. And Hero, oh he just might laugh.
So you'll go?
Homer: I'll go. Lord help me I will.
I made a choice one morning between the ones I loved. I loved my mother left her behind.
First Runaway:…He did right by law but wrong by me.
Penny, she does right by law, but wrong by you.
Homer: It's just a word. One of many. She's just a gal. Nothing more than that. She ain't mine.
Even so.
Second Runaway: We thank you.
When a good man thinks of love he thinks of you.
Second Runaway: You're reading a page that ain't wrote yet.
You got value that would be better spent in a better place.
Penny: She was rambling. I couldn't make head or tail of it. “Freedome", she says.
“Freedom”?
First Runaway: Dead in the dirt.
And your Hero?
Homer: Dead.
Hero dead.
