Aquatic Marginal
Temporarily waterlogged wetlands. Connected to an open body of water.
Mires
Permanently waterlogged wetlands. Permanently disconnected from open body of water.
Fringe Wetland
A subset of aquatic marginal wetland. At the edge of the open body of water and has continuous hydrological connection to it. Estuaries are a fringe wetland.
Flood wetland
A subset of aquatic marginal. The wetland is formed because it is frequently flooded. Can only be connected during flooding events/high water.
Mineratrophic wetland (fens)
A subset of mires. Is very nutrient rich and are fed by a combination of groundwater and precipitation and runoff.
ombrotrophic (bogs)
A subset of mires. Only fed via precipitation and runoff.
Peat
A material mined for farming and agricultural purposes. Very unstable and releases methane into the environment.
aerenchyma tissues
Putting oxygen in the tissues.
Pneumatophores
Specialized "breathing" aerial roots found on plants in mangroves in order to get more oxygen.
phytoremediation
the treatment of pollutants or waste (as in contaminated soil or groundwater) by the use of green plants that remove, degrade, or stabilize the undesirable substances (such as toxic metals)
Bioaccumulation / magnification
When larger organisms eat smaller organisms with contaminants.
Nitrification
Creation of nitrates.
Denitrification
The deconstruction of nitrates.
Anaerobic Condition
Lack of Oxygen
