Capacitance
The ability to acquire a certain amount of maximum charge by conductors close to one another, proportional to the potential difference V between the plates.
Farad
The unit of capacitance, equivalent to 1 C/1 V.
Microfarad (μF)
A capacitance unit equal to 1imes10−6F.
Picofarad (pF)
A capacitance unit equal to 1imes10−12F.
Capacitor
A device capable of storing charge, typically composed of a dielectric material between two conductive plates.
Dielectric
A non-conductive material placed between the plates of a capacitor.
Electric field
A field around charged particles that exerts force on other charged objects.
Gaussian Law
A principle used to determine the electric field created by a distribution of charge.
Charge Density (σ)
Charge per unit area, defined as σ = rac{dQ}{dA}.
Uniform Charge Distribution
A consistent distribution of charge over a surface, important for calculating electric fields.
Parallel Plates Capacitor
A type of capacitor with two parallel conductive plates separated by a distance.
Energy Storage in Capacitors
The process by which capacitors store electrical energy for various applications.
