Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
A clot that forms in a vein.
Pathophysiology
The study of how disease processes affect the function of the body.
Hypercoagulability
A condition where the blood clots more easily than normal.
Prophylactic Anticoagulants
Medications administered to prevent blood clots.
Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
A blockage in one of the pulmonary arteries in the lungs, often due to blood clots.
IV Heparin
Intravenous anticoagulant used for immediate blood thinning.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
An oral anticoagulant that requires monitoring of INR to ensure therapeutic levels.
Atrial Fibrillation
An irregular and often rapid heart rate that can increase the risk of strokes.
Chronic Venous Insufficiency
A condition where veins struggle to send blood from the limbs back to the heart.
Intermittent Claudication
Pain and cramping in the legs during physical activity, relieved by rest.
Segmental Pressure Measurements
A test that measures blood pressure in the legs and arms to identify peripheral vascular disease.
Atherosclerosis
A condition where fatty deposits develop on the artery walls, leading to reduced blood flow.
Nonpharmacologic Therapy
Treatment methods that do not involve medication, including lifestyle changes.
SCDs (Sequential Compression Devices)
Devices that help prevent DVT by promoting blood flow in the legs.
D-dimer
A blood test that measures fibrin degradation products; elevated levels can indicate clot formation.
Lifestyle Risk Factors
Factors that increase the likelihood of developing chronic diseases, such as obesity, smoking, and sedentary lifestyle.
Vein Thrombectomy
Surgical procedure for the removal of thrombi from veins.
