how do lymphatic capillaries differ from blood capillaries?

they are endothelial tubes that begin blindly and they are not open at both ends

what do lymphatic capillaries do?

conduct the lymph toward veins

as several lymphatic capillaries conduct lymph toward veins, what happens?

several of them join to form an AFFERENT LYMPHATIC VESSEL

what do afferent lymphatic vessels contain? what do they do?

folds that form valves, which allow for flow of lymph in one direction --> toward veins

what do afferent lymphatic vessels convey lymph to?

lymph nodes

what is the function of lymph nodes?

filters the lymph through its cortex and medulla

where does the lymph pass leaving the lymph node?

into the EFFERENT LYMPHATIC VESSELS

efferent lymphatic vessels (contain, do not contain) valves

what do the efferent lymphatic vessels do?

pass the lymph to the venous system

what does the right lymphatic duct drain?

the right half of the head, neck, chest, and right upper limb

what drains the rest of the body?

thoracic duct

where does all of the lymph inferior to the diaphragm collect?

in the cisterna chyli

where does the cisterna chyli flow?

SUPERIORLY forming the thoracic duct

as the thoracic duct continues to flow through the thorax, what does it do?

collects lymph from the left half of the head, neck, chest, and left upper limb

where do both ducts end?

in their respective brachiocephalic veins or its nearby tributaries

lymph nodes (are, are not) found throughout most of the body
