Total Lung Capacity (TLC)
The total volume of gas in the lungs after maximal inhalation.
total lung capacity
residual volume (RV) + vital capacity (VC)
Tidal Volume (TV)
The volume of gas inspired or expired with each breath in an unforced respiratory cycle.
Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV)
Maximum volume of gas that can be inspired during forced breath, beyond a normal inspiration.
Expiratory Reserve Volume (ERV)
Maximum volume of gas that can be exhaled during forced breath.
Residual Volume (RV)
The volume of gas remaining in the lungs after maximal exhalation.
Vital Capacity (VC)
The maximum amount of gas that can be exhaled after maximum inhalation.
vital capacity
Maximum inhalation - Maximum exhalation
Inspiratory Capacity (IC)
Maximum amount of gas that can be inhaled after a normal tidal expiration.
Inspiratory Capacity (IC)
Tidal Volume (TV) + Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV)
Functional Residual Capacity
Amount of gas remaining in the lungs after normal tidal expiration.
Forced Vital Capacity (FVC)
The amount of air exhaled forcefully after maximum inhalation.
Forced Expiration Volume - One-Second (FEV1)
Measures the volume of air exhaled in the first second of forced expiration following a maximum inhalation.
Forced Expiration Volume - One-Second (FEV1)
maximum inhalation (plateau) - lung capacity at 1 second
Percent Forced Expiration Volume - One-Second (%FEV1)
Measures the volume of air exhaled in the first second of forced expiration following a maximum inhalation.
Percent Forced Expiration Volume - One-Second (%FEV1)
FEV1/FVC x100%
pulmonary fibrosis
build up of scar tissue
emphysema
fewer but larger alveoli, reduced surface are for gas exchange
pneumonia
infection of the lungs
restrictive disorder
damage to the lung tissue, low VC but normal FEV1
obstructive
narrowing of the airways, normal VC but reduced FEV1
asthma
narrowing of airways due to bronchoconstriction and excess mucus
chronic bronchitis
chronic inflammation of the bronchi, leading to excessive mucus production and narrowing of airways.
COPD chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
collection of symptoms that includes chronic airway inflammation, alveolar destruction, emphysema
