Mutualism
Both species BENEFIT (+/+). Example: clownfish and sea anemone; bees and flowers.
Commensalism
One species benefits, the other is UNAFFECTED (+/0). Example: barnacles on a whale.
Parasitism
One species benefits (parasite), the other is HARMED (+/−). Example: ticks on a dog; tapeworms in intestines.
Predation
One organism (predator) hunts and kills another (prey) for food. Controls population sizes.
Competition
Two species compete for the same limited resource (food, water, territory). Usually both are negatively affected.
