define a zwitterion
A molecule that has both positive and negative charges but no net charge
ex. amino acids at a netural pH
Why do amino acids exist as a zwitterion in neutral solutions (~pH7), and how is this impactful on a physiological level?
The carboxyl group is deprotonated (-COO⁻)
The amine group is protonated (-NH₃⁺)
→ dissolves easily in water
