Brainstem
The part of the brain that connects the cerebrum with the spinal cord and plays a crucial role in regulating vital functions.
Function of the Brainstem
Serves as a conduit for ascending and descending tracts, contains reflex centers, and houses cranial nerve nuclei.
Reticular Formation
A network of neurons located throughout the brainstem that is involved in regulating arousal, attention, and consciousness.
Pyramidal Decussation
The crossing of most cortical spinal tract fibers at the junction of the medulla and spinal cord.
Corticobulbar Tract
The pathway that connects the cortex to lower motor neurons in cranial nerve nuclei that control head and neck muscles.
Raphe Nuclei
A group of nuclei in the brainstem that produce serotonin and play a role in regulating sleep.
Noradrenergic Neurons
Neurons that release norepinephrine and are active during arousal and attention.
Medulla Oblongata
The lower portion of the brainstem that regulates various autonomic functions such as breathing and heart rate.
Cerebral Aqueduct
A canal in the midbrain that connects the third and fourth ventricles and is involved in the flow of cerebrospinal fluid.
Substantia Nigra
A brain structure involved in movement and reward, with dopamine-producing neurons that are damaged in Parkinson’s disease.
Cranial Nerve Nuclei
Clusters of nerve cell bodies in the brainstem that provide the origins of cranial nerves controlling various bodily functions.
Ascending Tracts
Pathways in the central nervous system that carry sensory information from the body to the brain.
Descending Tracts
Pathways that carry motor commands from the brain to the spinal cord and peripheral nerves.
