Rounding to significant figures
The process of reducing a number to a specific degree of accuracy based on its first non-zero digits.
Truncating decimals
Shortening a decimal number by removing all digits after a certain point without rounding up or down.
Roots and powers
Mathematical operations involving a base number raised to an exponent or finding the number that, when multiplied by itself, gives the base value.
Laws of indices
Rules for simplifying expressions with powers, including rules such as am×an=am+n and (am)n=am×n.
Highest common factor (HCF)
The largest whole number that divides exactly into two or more numbers.
Lowest common multiple (LCM)
The smallest positive integer that is a multiple of two or more numbers.
Ordering fractions, decimals and percentages
The ability to compare and arrange numerical values in different formats by converting them into a single common format.
Percentage change
The difference between an old and new value expressed as a percentage, calculated as originalchange×100.
Ratio 1:n form
Expressing a ratio such that the first part is equal to 1, often used for scale calculations.
Ratio-sharing
The process of dividing a total quantity into parts based on the relative proportions defined by a ratio.
Value for money
A technique for comparing the cost of different sized items to find which provides the best price per unit of weight or volume.
Expand double brackets
The algebraic process of multiplying each term in the first set of brackets by each term in the second set of brackets.
Factorise
The inverse of expanding, where an algebraic expression is rewritten as a product of its factors.
Solving equations
Finding the specific numerical value for an unknown variable that makes a mathematical equality true.
Equations with the unknown on both sides
Equations where the variable appears on both the left and right side of the equals sign, requiring rearrangement to solve.
Sequences
An ordered list of numbers that follow a specific pattern or mathematical rule to determine the next terms.
Changing the subject of a formula
Rearranging a formula to isolate a different variable on one side of the equals sign.
Plotting straight line graphs
Drawing a linear relationship on a coordinate grid based on an equation in the form y=mx+c.
Averages from frequency tables
Calculating the mean, median, or mode from data sets that have been grouped into a frequency distribution table.
Area of a circle
The space contained within the boundary of a circle, calculated using the formula A = \text{\pi} \times r^2.
Surface area of prisms
The total area of all the faces (including the cross-sectional ends and the lateral sides) of a three-dimensional prism.
