Handwashing procedure
Gather the needed supplies and equipment (soap, paper towels sink, waste container)
Turn on the faucet
Wet the hands and wrists holding the fingertips down
Apply soap and work into lather
Rub all surfaces of the hands, between fingers, under nails and at least 2 inches above the wrist continuously for at least 20 seconds. Keep uniform and body away from the sink edge
Rinse hands under running water without touching the sink or faucet holding the finger tips downward. Do not shake or flick fingers
Dry hands and wrists thoroughly using paper towels without touching the paper towel dispenser or the sink. Dispose of paper towel
Turn the faucet off using a new paper towel
Discard the paper towel in the waste container
Glove removal procedure
With the fingertips of one hand, pinch the palm of the opposite glove, taking care to only touch the glove
Pull the pinched glove toward the fingertips and remove the glove from the hand with the glove ending inside out
Hold on to the loose glove with the gloved hand
Place the fingers of the ungloved hand inside the cuff of the gloved hand between the skin at the wrist and the glove
Pull the glove toward the fingertips, turning the glove inside out
Remove the gloves and discard into the nearest waste container

Wash and dry hands thoroughly
Apply gloves
Hold and carry soiled equipment away from clothing
Clean soiled equipment (bedpan, urinal, etc.) with cold water and appropriate disinfectant per policy
Remove gloves and dispose in proper container
Wash hands
Return clean equipment to appropriate storage area
Handling Wastes Procedure
Wash and dry hands thoroughly
Apply gloves
Deposit soiled items in waste container
Clean contaminated surfaces with disinfectant per facility policy
Remove gloves and dispose in waste container
Touch only the outside of waste container bag: tie bag clothes
Replace waste container liner
Wash and dry hands thoroughly
Dispose of waste container bag according to facility policy
Handling soiled bed linens procedures
Wash and dry hands thoroughly
Apply gloves
Roll soiled linen away from the body being careful to not touch linen to clothing
Places soiled linen in linen bag
Remove gloves and dispose in waste container
Touch only the outside of soiled linen bag, close and tie top of bag shut
Wash and dry hands thoroughly
Dispose of linen bag per facility policy
Abdominal thrust procedure
Ask “are you choking?”, “Can you breathe?”, “Can I help you?” If the resident cannot verbally answer continue with the procedure for abdominal thrusts
Call out for help (“Help, help I need help” or “You, call 911”)
Stand behind resident
Place one leg between the resident’s legs and the other leg slightly behind you
Wrap your arms around the residents waist
Make a fist and place the thumb of your fist against the resident’s abdomen. just above the navel and below the rib cage
Grab that fist with the other hand
Give a quick, upward thrust into the resident’s abdomen
Repeat thrusts until object is expelled or help arrives
Making a mitered corner procedure
Drape the sheet so it is hanging over the side of the bed. Tuck the bottom edge of the sheet at the foot of the bed under the mattress
Hold the edge of the sheet approximately 12 inches from the foot of the bed and lift it up, forming a triangle. Lay the triangle fold on top of the bed. Make sure the sheet that is still hanging down is free of wrinkles
Tuck the portion that is hanging down underneath the mattress while holding firmly to the triangle fold on top of the mattress
Bring the triangle fold down over the side of the mattress and tuck it under the mattress
