Dermatitis

An inflammation of the skin.

Contact Dermatitis

From contact with something - can be allergic or irritant.

Actinic Dermatitis

From exposure to sun.

Stasis Dermatitis

Varicose veins or other circulation issues cause build up of fluid in the skin.

Atopic Dermatitis

Small raised bumps, red/leathery skin with cracked or scaly patches from unknown cause - usually thought to be related to an allergy (aka eczema).

Neurodermatitis

Repeated scratching of the skin leading to a single patch of leathery, scaly skin that may be rough or red/darker than other skin (aka Lichen Simplex Chronicus).

Perioral Dermatitis

Small red, pus-filled bumps around the mouth - maybe from use of steroid or nasal inhalers or cream.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

Yellowish scales or crusts on the scalp, face, or chest (aka dandruff).

Atopic Dermatitis Treatment

Topical steroids and moisturizers to help with dryness; rarely oral steroids.

Seborrheic Dermatitis Treatment

Selenium sulfide, zinc, topical terbinafine cream, ketoconazole cream/shampoo, oral ketoconazole.

Contact Dermatitis Treatment

Topical steroids; severe cases may require oral corticosteroids and antihistamines.

Urticaria

Itchy, wheal-and-flare skin reactions - HIVES.

Cause of Urticaria

Histamine release from mast cells leading to vasodilation and local tissue edema.

Angioedema

Subcutaneous or submucosal swelling associated with Urticaria up to 50% of the time.

Types of Urticaria

Includes Physical Urticaria, Autoimmune, Infections, Idiopathic, Vasculitic, and Pseudoallergic.

Physical Urticaria

Includes Dermatographism, Delayed Pressure, Cold, Aquagenic, Cholinergic, Solar, and Vibratory.

Urticaria Treatment

Protect from offending agent; topical steroids and antihistamines; oral anti-histamines; oral steroids.

Psoriasis

Chronic, recurring condition affecting up to 3% of the population characterized by scaly, silvery, papular plaques.

Psoriasis Risk

5 to 30% also have arthritis affecting DIP joints of fingers and toes.

Psoriasis Treatment

Topical and oral medications, sun/UV treatment, stress reduction.

Rosacea

Redness and visible blood vessels in the face, can lead to acne and ocular symptoms.

Rosacea Triggers

Hot drinks, spicy foods, red wine/alcohol, extreme temperatures, sunlight or wind, emotions, exercise.

Scabies

Mite that burrows under the skin, often in hand or foot webspaces.

Tick Bites

Can carry diseases; usually must be attached 36 to 48 hours to spread Lyme disease.
