During the English attack on Toury (TOO-ree) Castle, a French squire, a gentleman of courage, came from inside the castle and cried out to the English, "Is there among you any gentleman who for the love of his lady is willing to try with me some feat of arms?"

If there should be any such, here I am, quite ready to sally forth completely armed and mounted, to joust with the lance!

The squire's

The squire's name was Gauvain Micaille (goh-VAN mee-KYE).

His

His proposal and request was soon spread among the English, when a squire, called Joachim Cator (yo-AH-keem KAY-tor), stepped forth and said, "I will deliver him from his vow: let him make haste and come out of the castle."

They

They met each other with spears, but the Englishman kept his spear low, and at last struck it into the thigh of the Frenchman.

The earl

The earl declared they had done enough, and would not have it continue, for he perceived the French squire bled exceedingly.

Gauvain

Gauvain Micaille (goh-VAN mee-KYE) was therefore disarmed and his wound dressed.

The Englishmen

The Englishmen sent Gauvain 100 francs, adding that Gauvain had performed much to his satisfaction.
