Scientific Notation
A method for writing very small or very big numbers in a simpler, more efficient way.
Example Problem I: 5 × 10^5 (sci. notation)
Moves the decimal 5 places to the right to equal 500000.
Example Problem II: 980000 (sci. notation)
Converts to scientific notation as 9.8 × 10^5 by placing a decimal after the 9 and counting place values.
Positive Exponents in Scientific Notation
Indicate moving the decimal to the right.
Negative Exponents in Scientific Notation
Indicate moving the decimal to the left.
