1. find the decimal ( 5.)

2. move the decimal to the left or right; right for positive exponents, left for negative exponents. (500000.)

3. 5 × 10^ 5 = 500000

   OR

   example problem II. 980000

   1. put a decimal after the 9. (9.80000)

   2. count the place values from the decimal to the last zero.(8, 0, 0, 0, 0)

   3. 980000 = 9.8 × 10^5
