Una carta a Dios
The short story assigned for study, which includes information about the author and associated reading comprehension and vocabulary tasks.
Present Perfect Subjunctive (Indicative vs. Subjunctive)
While the indicative is used for certainty (e.g., Han pagado), the subjunctive is used for uncertainty or doubt (e.g., Dudo que hayan pagado).
Present Subjunctive vs. Present Perfect Subjunctive
The present subjunctive (e.g., EsposiblequeJuanvisiteMitla) refers to current or future actions, while the present perfect subjunctive (e.g., EsposiblequeJuanhayavisitadoMitla) indicates the action in the subordinate clause took place in the past.
Formation of the Present Perfect Subjunctive
Formed with the present subjunctive of the auxiliary verb haber + the past participle of the main verb.
Conjugations of haber (Present Perfect Subjunctive)
The forms are: yohaya, tuˊhayas, eˊl/ella/Ud.haya, nosotros(as)hayamos, vosotros(as)hayaˊis, and ellos/ellas/Uds.hayan.
Usage of the Present Perfect Subjunctive
Used to describe events that have ended prior to the time indicated in the main clause when the subordinate clause requires the subjunctive.
Imperfect Subjunctive
A past form of the subjunctive used when the context of the sentence is in the past (e.g., Lospadrinosquerıˊanquefelicitaˊramosalgraduado).
Formation of the Imperfect Subjunctive
Formed by removing the −ron ending of the ellos/ellas/Uds. form of the preterite and adding the endings −ra, −ras, −ra, −ramos, −rais, or −ran.
Imperfect Subjunctive Endings
The endings −ra, −ras, −ra, −ramos, −rais, and −ran are the same for −ar, −er, and −ir verbs.
Nosotros form (Imperfect Subjunctive)
In the imperfect subjunctive, the nosotros form always requires a written accent (e.g., hablaˊramos, comieˊramos).
Irregular Imperfect Subjunctive
If a verb is irregular in the ellos/ellas/Uds. form of the preterite, such as ir (fueron), it will also be irregular in the imperfect subjunctive (fuera).
