Crisis
condition resulting in sudden, intense, and/or unsafe behavior for self and others
Escalation
the topography of the behavior is intensifying
Prevention
creating conditions that would make the behavior less valuable ; avoid crisis all together
De-Escalation
procedures that assist in reducing or turning the behavior off
Factors Effecting Behavior
External: outside variables: culture (experience), environmental triggers
Internal: inside variables: biological, personality traits, motivation
Disability: regulation, communication barriers, limited experience and exposure
Crisis Prevention
proactive measures that avoid crisis situations from occurring
Prep: attire, fingernails & hair, document review, materials & tools
Environment: remove restricted items, block exits, minimize distraction, clear pathways, boundaries
Awareness: clear line of sight, proximity, positioning
Behavior Intervention
procedures working to decrease the frequency of challenging behavior (extinction, alternate behaviors, wait out, task reduction
Crisis Management/De-Escalation
intervening in order to minimize risk/harm and protect safety of individuals and environment
Client Dignity
treating individuals with respect, maintaining confidentiality, upholding autonomy regardless of behavior, culturally responsive
Maintain Professional Boundaries
avoid dual relationships, conflicts of interest, any social media contact
Supervision Requirements
must be under clearly defined role with close supervision, at least two face to face per month, ensure BACB accounts are up to date and RBT is listed under the supervisor for supervision, must have client specific knowledge to be able to observe the RBT, employed by the same organization or contractual relationship
Non-Compliant RBT with Supervision Rules
= immediate termination and no reapplication for 6 months
Clinical Direction
RBTs take necessary actions to protect clients when they become aware that a client’s legal rights are being violated or that there is risk of harm to a client. In these instances, RBTs report the matter to their supervisor → (in my client case → someone using punishment / bruising like in Abby’s class, restraint)
