Ben Pelet
Chazal: Owen Ben Pelet was part of the revolt against Moshe during the incident of the spies, who challenged his leadership and authority. His wife got him drunk, then he fell asleep and made sure no one came in to get him for the rebelion.
Veyecach Korach; what did he take?
Rashi: He took himself away from the community.
Usually the Torah say’s the names of fathers but now it says Korach ben Yither, ben Khet, ben Leit why?
It’s giving context that he was related to Moshe and was a Levi.
What does Khat and Levi mean?
Khat: They would carry the Mishkan
Levi: He comes from an important bloodline just like Aharon, he got a promotion.
The people that rebelled with Korach weren’t from Levi, but from Reuven?
Ibn Ezra: Shevet Reuven were the ones who were gonna be the leaders, but then sinned at Chet Haegel. The Levi’s then got it because they were the holiest.
Rashi: In the desert, Levi and Rueven were neighbors. They got influenced by Levi’s.
You have too much:
Rashi: Korach is saying that Moshe and aharon took too much for themselves
We are all holy:
Rashi: We are all Jews, we all heard the Torah. You already took the 1st position, why did you give the second to your brother
Why didn’t Aharon fall on his face?
Ramban: Because Moshe defended Aharon for him.
Why wait till tomorrow morning?
Rashi: To give Korach a chance to do Teshuvah.
During lunch they would get drunk and they cannot serve at the mishkan.
Rashi story:
Korach challenged moshe in order to embarrass him/ make him look bad. Korach asked Moshe, "if you have a room with a sefraih Torah, do u need mezuzas? moshe said yes. then korach asked " can u have more then one blue string on a tzitzit? moshe said no its not kosher. And Korach asked how this makes sense, Moshe didnt know.
vav:
Do this, Korah and his company: Take for yourselves ketoret.
why do they choose ketoret?
Rashi: Moshe said to Korach "in the none jewish world, there are lots of sacrifices but jews only have a couple. ketoret is the most dangerous, and precious. only the real Cohen may complete the sacrifice without dying
zayin:
Place fire into them and put incense upon them before the Lord tomorrow, and the man whom the Lord chooses he is the holy one; you have taken too much upon yourselves, sons of Levi."
why did Korach do it if he knew he would die?
Rashi: Korach had nevua that his children would end up serving in the Beit Hamkidash, so he thought it would be safe to continue with the Ketoret. what he didnt realize was that his children would do tshuva
Chet:
Moses said to Korah, "Please listen, sons of Levi.
Rashi: moshe in the beginning of the story starts with "a nice and warm tone" then it gets more aggressive. this shows that Moshe noticed Korachs stuberness
Yud:
He drew you near, and all your brothers, the sons of Levi with you, and now you seek the kehunah as well?
Or chaim: Moshe tells Korach you have one of the best jobs (to carry the Aharon)
Yud bet:
Moshe sent to call Datan and Aviram, the sons of Eliav, but they said, "We will not go up.
why was moshe calling them?
Rashi:
1. Moshe was calling them to stop the fight between them and moshe. we learn here to always stop a fight
2. "we won't come down"; its like a self fulfilling profacy. they will only go down from here
tet vav:
Moses was exceedingly distressed, and he said to the Lord, "Do not accept their offering. I have not taken a donkey from a single one of them, and I have not harmed a single one of them."
Rashi: moshe says to HAshem to except Aharons Ketoret
midrash: everyday there a korban done on behalf of all BNY. Moshe didn't want Da'atan and Aviram to be included in it because they were such bad people
Yud Chet:
They each took their fire pan, put fire in it, laid incense on it, and took a place at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, as did Moses and Aaron.
why is Moshe with Aharon?
Netziv: Right know Aaron is breaking protocol by giving ketoret. it is not the right time or place. he only did this to defend him and his position. Moshe is standing with him as a sign of acknolegment that what he is doing is an exeption.
yud tet:
Korah gathered the whole community against them at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. Then the Presence of GOD appeared to the whole community,
Netziv: He just gathered the rebelion
Rashi: Karachi spent the whole night gathering people to be witness's
chaf bet:
But they fell on their faces and said, "O God, Source of the breath of all flesh! When one member sins, will You be wrathful with the whole community?"
what does this mean?
Rashi: kill all the bad people but not the good innocent people. your not human. you know EXACTLY who's evil.
chaf chet:
And Moses said, "By this you shall know that it was GOD who sent me to do all these things; that they are not of my own devising:
what does now you will know it was God mean?
Iban ezra: now u will know it was Hashems idea to make the Levim Cohenim and not the bechorim. now you will know it was Hashem that appointed Aharon.
Netziv: this proves Moshe never wanted any of this. it was all Hashem's doing
Chaf tet- Lamed:
if these people's death is that of all humankind, if their lot is humankind's common fate, it was not GOD who sent me.
But if GOD brings about something unheard-of, so that the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into Sheol, you shall know that those involved have spurned GOD."
Rashi "G":
Usually HAshem operates world through natural nature always. except when proving a point or doing a miracle the world hasn't seen anything like this since creation.
Lamed bet:
"The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, their households, all the people who belonged to Korach, and all the property."
Netziv: wasn't there literal houses that got swallowed, it was there households which includes all people that supported Korach
Lamed Gimel:
"They and all that belonged to them went down alive into the grave (Sheol), and the earth covered them over, and they disappeared from among the congregation."
Ground completely covered the land so that it looked like nothing happened
