What is rust and its chemical equation?

  • Chemical reaction between iron, water and oxygen

    • Rust is the reddish-brown oxide product called hydrated iron (III) oxide

    • Steel, which also contains iron, rusts under the same conditions

    • Iron is oxidised

Describe some barrier methods and how they prevent rusting

  • Grease

  • Paint

  • Oil

  • Plastic

  • Prevent iron from coming into contact with oxygen or water, if it is scratched or broken they will be exposed again

Explain the use of zinc in galvanising and sacrificial protection

  • Galvanising: process where iron is coated in a layer of zinc

  • Sacrificial protection: when metals higher in the reactivity series are used to form a protective layer on the surface of metals lower in reactivity

    • Zinc is higher in the reactivity series, therefore loses electrons more easily and reacts more easily

    • Zinc oxidises first and sacrifices itself to protect the iron
