the three states of matter
solids, liquids, gases
solids
the particles are close together - vibrate around fixed positions - they have no spaces between them, so they are rigid - they have a fixed shape and volume - cannot be compressed - high density
liquids
the particles are close together but able to slide past each other - hard to compress - particles can move over each other - no fixed shape - can flow/take shape of their container - fixed volume - less dense than solids
gases
the particles are far apart (have spaces between them) - can move quickly and randomly - no fixed shape/volume - can completely fill a container - can be compressed into a smaller volume - contain particles that collide - much lowed density than solids and liquids
density
how packed together something is
solids → gases
increasing energy
gases → solids
increasing density
separation
space between particles - compressed, rigid/not - slide past each other/not
arrangement
how particles are arranged in the structure - fixed/not fixed volume - high/low density - fixed/not fixed shape
motion of particles
the way they move → vibrate around fixed positions/not - slide or flow/not - randomly in all directions/not - collide with each other / not
