Matter

Matter makes up everything around us, characterized as having mass and occupying space.

Atom

The smallest component of an element that retains all chemical properties.

Atomic Theory

The theory that all matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms.

Subatomic particles

Particles that make up an atom: protons, neutrons, and electrons.

Protons

Positively charged subatomic particles found in the nucleus of an atom.

Neutrons

Subatomic particles with no charge found in the nucleus of an atom.

Electrons

Negatively charged subatomic particles that orbit the nucleus of an atom.

Element

A pure substance made of only one kind of atom, defined by the number of protons.

Molecule

A group of two or more atoms bonded together.

Common elements in living organisms

Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H), Oxygen (O), Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Sulfur (S).

Ecosystem

A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.

Biosphere

The global sum of all ecosystems, where life exists on Earth.

Population

A group of individuals of the same species living in a particular area.

Organism

Any individual living thing.

Community

A group of different species that live together in one area.

Cell

The basic structural, functional, and biological unit of all living organisms.

Tissue

Groups of cells that work together to perform a specific function.

Organ

A group of tissues that work together to perform a specific task.

Body system

A group of organs that work together to perform complex functions.
