Asteroid Belt
A belt of asteroids separating the inner planets from the outer planets. Location of dwarf planet Ceres.

Kuiper Belt
A disc-shaped region beyond the orbit of Neptune containing thousands of small icy bodies, including four dwarf planets.

Oort Cloud
A spherical layer of icy objects surrounding our sun, at a distance of 2,000 to 100,000 AU. Origin of long-period comets.

Comet
A celestial object made of ice and dust which orbits the sun on highly eccentric elliptical orbits. Short period comets originate in the Kuiper belt, while long period comets originate in the Oort Cloud. When close to the sun will release gases and dust which form a 'tail'.

Meteor
A small body of rock or metal that burns in the Earth's atmosphere. Shooting star.

Asteroid
A small rocky body orbiting the sun. Most are found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Vary in shape. Thought to be made of leftover rock from the formation of the solar system.

Edmund Halley
English astronomer. First to predict the return visit of a comet in 1705, which was then named for him.

Halley's Comet
Short-period comet which returns every 76 years.
