Theoretical Field Capacity (TFC)
The capacity of a machine calculated based on its full width and rated speed: TFC=10W×S where W is in meters and S is in kph.
Field Efficiency (FE)
The ratio of actual field capacity to theoretical field capacity, expressed as a percentage: FE=TFCAFC×100.
Drawbar horsepower (DBHP)
The useful pulling power at the drawbar of a tractor: DBHP=375Draft×mph.
Three-phase electric motor
A motor characterized by higher efficiency, smoother torque, and lower operating cost compared to single-phase motors, though it has a higher first cost.
Propeller pump
A dynamic or axial-flow pump that is not classified as a positive displacement pump.
Specific yield of well
The discharge from a well per unit of drawdown, expressed in units such as 3gpm/ft.
Combustion efficiency
The ratio of the heat released by fuel to the theoretical heat available during the burning process.
Hill-drop planter
A planter designed to place seeds at regular intervals or 'hills' within rows.
Two-element, scissor-type action
The cutting mechanism most commonly used in reciprocating cutter bars for reapers and combines.
Vertical clearance
Also known as vertical suction, it is the downward bend of the plow share point that aids in soil penetration.
Farm budget
A projection of cash inflows and outflows used to estimate the expected net benefit of a farm activity.
Equivalence
The economic concept where different sums of money at different times are considered equal in value due to the time value of money.
Simple payback period
The time required for an investment's savings to offset its first cost without considering interest or discounting: Payback=AnnualNetBenefitInitialCost.
Effective annual rate (EAR)
The real interest rate on an investment or loan for one year considering compounding: EAR=(1+mi)m−1.
Agricultural and Biosystems Engineer Seal
A circular professional seal with a defined diameter of 46mm.
RA 10601
The Agricultural and Fisheries Mechanization Law (AFMech Law).
RA 10915
The Philippine Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Act of 2016, which strengthens and modernizes ABE practice.
PD 1096
The National Building Code of the Philippines.
Hygroscopic water
Water tightly held around soil particles by attractive forces, making it unavailable to plants and removable only by strong heating.
Darcy's Law
An equation describing the flow of a fluid through a porous medium: Q=kAi.
Orographic lifting
A process where air is forced upward by a mountain barrier, leading to cooling and precipitation.
Lapse rate
The rate of temperature decrease with an increase in elevation, typically 6.5∘C/1000m.
Permanent wilting point (PWP)
The amount of water retained in the soil against a tension of 15atm, at which point plants can no longer extract moisture.
Available moisture (AM)
The difference between Field Capacity (FC) and Permanent Wilting Point (PWP): AM=FC−PWP.
Infiltration rate
The rate at which water moves into the soil surface.
Sheet erosion
The uniform removal of a thin layer of soil from the land surface, which is often difficult to detect.
Rational Method Formula
A formula used to estimate peak runoff: Q=0.00278CIA where C is the runoff coefficient, I is intensity in mm/hr, and A is area in ha.
Type I Error
A statistical error that occurs when a true null hypothesis (H0) is rejected.
Foliar spray fertilizer
A type of fertilizer dissolved in water and applied directly to the leaves of the plant.
Foot-candle (fc)
A unit of illumination defined as one lumen per square foot: 1fc=1ft21lumen.
Ohm's Law
The relationship between voltage (V), current (I), and resistance (R): V=IR.
Circular Mil (CM)
A unit of area for wires, equal to the square of the diameter (d) in mils: CM=d2.
Board foot
A volume unit for lumber: Bd.ft=12T(in)×W(in)×L(ft).
Milling recovery (MR)
The percentage of milled rice obtained from the original paddy: MR=PaddyMilledRice×100.
Hulling coefficient (HC)
The ratio of brown rice to total paddy: HC=PaddyBrownRice.
