-into fatty tissue beneath the skin @ 45 or 90 degrees (depends on how much body fat)
-needle length: 3/8-5/8 inches
-gauge: 25-30
intramuscular (IM)
-inject deep into muscle @ 90 degrees
-needle length: 1-1.5 inches
-gauge: 20-25
-usually used for small volumes of medicine
intradermal (ID)
-goes just under top layer of skin @ 10-15 degrees (almost flat against skin)
-needle length: 1/4-1/2 inch
-gauge: 26-28
intravenous (IV)
-goes directly into vein @ 15-30 degrees
- needle gauge: 14-24
Epidural
-goes around the spinal cord
-needle length: specialized long needles
