Treaty of Tordesillas

An agreement between Spain and Portugal that settled land claims in the New World. It revised and changed land ownership according to the old line of demarcation. In 1493 Pope Alexander VI ordered a line of demarcation(an imaginary line that reached from the north pole to the south pole and cut through Atlantic ocean ) Spain was to control all land west of line, and Portugal control all land east of the line. Portugal thought Spain had more land so they objected, and they came up with this treaty that moved the line more west to be more fair and the treaty was signed in 1494.
