universality definition
means theory can apply to all people, irrespective of gender + culture.
but, this also means that it needs to include real differences.
e.g. attachment
gender
in relation to gender, this means developing theories that show the similarities + differences between males and females,
w/o devaluing either gender.
may mean using a variety of RM and considering women in the natural settings in which they function.
culture
with regard to culture, one way to achieve universality would be to employ what Berry described as a derived etic.
series of emic studies take place in local setting, conducted by local researchers, using local techniques.
such studies can build up a picture of human behaviour.
this involves the study of diff cultures through the use of comparisons; by making comparisons between cultures, we can learn more about a target culture.
